Third Eye

Those who believe the pineal gland, or epiphysis cerebri, to be the enigmatic ‘third eye’ of the human consciousness may have been producing far too much melatonin with their actual, physiological pineal gland and inducing acute bouts of deep rapid eye movement.  I do not immediately discredit those who have speculated about the unique, pinecone-shaped piece of anatomy at the base of the brain being some transcendent window between the physical and spiritual world; after all, Rene Descartes (…”[He thought, therefore he was]”) had such speculations and I have found no one that dismisses him as a quack, despite rather deviant views on this matter.  There is a mystery in the ordinary experience of consciousness; why do you think there are so many ‘TED Talks’ on the subject?  The reason it would be tomfoolery to immediately dismiss at least speculations about the conduit nature of certain body parts is that very few, if any, religious or spiritual teaches did so.  There is an inextricable link between the body and the soul.  If a woman is raped, she would not testify in court “that man raped my body,” but rather “that man raped me.”  Without thinking, we do not immediately disassociate the two.  Please do not get me wrong.  I do not mean to suggest some ethereal, transcendental nonsense that implies if we meditate long enough, seated (or not) in the right position, with the right inflection of ohms in our tonality that we can channel our inner enlightenment through our soul’s window.  This would be to botch true meditation.  But I do mean to suggest that even the master teacher himself made clear the link between the body and soul:  “"The eye is the lamp of the body; so then if your eye is clear, your whole body will be full of light.” (Matt. 6:22)
