Firetrucks

If you didn’t have a pre-conception of what a ‘firetruck’ is, it would be forgivable for you to think that it was some egregiously aggrandized, bombastic vehicle that was merely meant for some spectacle of a show, such as a ‘monster truck’ or parade float. It would be understandable not merely to think that it was a loud engine with an even louder horn, decked with ladders and bright, fluorescent paint. Indeed, what you would likely be inclined to think is that this radiant display of a large vehicle is precisely equipped with flamethrowers, and exuberant exhaust pipes that spit fire, and maybe even has a coal fire engine, at least a pseudo one for extra flare, quite literally. After all, it is a FIRE truck. Why would it not have all the furnishings and capabilities of a truck that is designed precisely to display its fury of fire that it contains within itself. To be sure, we have been adequately acclimated to understand that a ‘firetruck’ has no such furnishings at all; instead, it has precisely the opposite of it would be safe to presume from its moniker. It has tanks and reservoirs, not of combustible fuel ready to be ignited in fiery display, but rather of water, ready to fight the fires and quickly eradicate them. Perhaps it would be more sensical to call it a ‘firefighter truck’, as this would be far more logical. However, we all know that language does not always develop in that way, and doesn’t that make life interesting? In the same way, it would not be spurious to presume that if God became a man and took on flesh, he would be perfect in every way. And praise be to God, that is exactly what he have in the Son of God, the second person of the Trinity, Jesus Christ Himself! But we may not expect, without the retroactive insight that we are privy to, is that he would become a curse for us (see Gal 3:13), in order to redeem us from the curse of the law. It may be that this is the premier example of fighting fire with fire.
