Bread

I am not unaware that various trends, fads, and - shall we even say - superstitions thrive within the world of what some has deemed as ‘dieting’ regarding carbohydrates and the necessity to avoid such ‘evils’. The “Keto Diet”, the “Paleo Diet”, and many others besides have, by de facto, ruled out the consumption of carbohydrates for any such person who wishes to be a compliant citizen in their community, and not a lawbreaker of the dietary variety. Now, while I have rarely been accused of being a moderate, I am fully of the persuasion that inclines towards moderation in many arenas, particularly that of food, and precisely that of the complex carbohydrate variety. There are quite a few individuals, especially in modern Western societies that would do well to implement the principle of moderation quite liberally. That is, their liberty in consumption of food has freely and liberally expressed itself of its own accord, right about the nexus of their waistline. The thinness of their moderation in self-control has been inversely manifest in the thickness of their corporeal midsection. But may it be keenly, acutely, and unequivocally clear that I do not hold the position that is absolutely restrictive towards carbohydrates as a category for consumption. After all, God expressly gave “every seed-bearing plant for food” (Gen 1:29) to Adam and his offspring, and I am a son of Adam, many steps removed (though not as many as some would like to think!). And the last I checked…hang on…let me check again…okay, I’m back…yes, the last I checked, wheat is a seed-bearing plant, and this grain is a great starting ingredient to produce some the most wonderful delicacies known to man, otherwise known as bread. Bread is good for the soul, even an essential part of many varieties of “soul food”. Bread is inviting, or why else would professional establishments of dining place it on the table first, so as to invite you into the meal? Bread is warm, and its a shame when it’s not. Even Christ himself analogized himself with bread, and how it was integrally connected to life. But, there’s one last thing: just wine gladdens the heart and oil makes the face shine, I think that bread may even be sustaining for your heart! (Ps. 104:15)
