Assassin’s Creed[s]
The apparent mantra of the vigilante renegades popularly portrayed in the aforementioned series is that they “Fight for the light in the dark.” If that sounds counterintuitive…if something looks like a duck, quacks like a duck and has ducks for parents, then it’s almost certainly a duck. These rogue fighters who have keen acrobatic skill go through their world personally taking vengeance on perpetrators of the law. However, taking the law, or the enforcement of the law, into one’s on hands is much weightier than holding the Supreme Court building in one’s own hands – it is holding the universe in one’s own hands. How, you ask, is this different than a police officer administering justice? An officer of the law has been placed there and commissioned by society to uphold justice and to serve and protect. A rogue vigilante, acting in the spirit of the lone wolf biting the neck of the invasive coyote is quite distinct from the drone bees that exist to protect the rest of the colony from intruding wasps. One pretends to serve while delusions of grandeur and personal rage hijack purer motives, while the other actually and truly serves. The difference is one between an officer who seeks to actually ‘protect and serve’ and a CIA operative who wants to manipulate individuals and world governments. Trying to take the enforcement of the law into one’s own hands is trying to administer justice and wrath from an individual level, neither of which we can effectively do. I will say if these ‘assassins’ are just out to kill some stellar parkour moves, fight on!
